How to Stop Cramps with Colitis
For people who suffer from colitis, cramps can be a part of everyday life. While the disease is active in the body, abdominal pain and diarrhea are common symptoms. With proper medical care, however, this inflammatory bowel disease can go into remission. Colitis can stay in remission for months or years, but even during flare-ups there are ways to stop cramps with colitis.
Cramps occur with colitis because there are spasms in the colon and rectum. This is usually caused by diarrhea. The diarrhea that accompanies colitis causes food to pass through the colon too quickly, resulting in contractions that cause cramps. To stop these cramps, the diarrhea and spasms must be stopped.
One way to stop the diarrhea, and the cramps that accompany it, is through medication. Anti-diarrheal medications such as loratidine usually work quickly to stop diarrhea and ease cramps. Pain relievers are another medication used to help with cramps. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is good for mild cramps. If cramps are severe, a doctor may prescribe a stronger medication for the pain. Avoid using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) such as ibuprofen or naproxen sodium, however, as they can make symptoms worse.
Another way to stop cramps is by making dietary changes. Avoiding foods that are known to trigger diarrhea will help stop colitis cramps. Eating a diet of low-fat, low-fiber foods is the best way to accomplish this. Eat lean cuts of meat or poultry, use low-fat margarine and dairy products, and avoid fried greasy foods. Other known trigger foods to potentially avoid are spicy foods, alcohol, caffeine and foods that produce gas such as broccoli, cabbage and beans.
Food combining is another excellent way to stop colitis cramps. It works by showing you the right foods to eat together to have better digestion. Have you ever had a steak and baked potato for dinner, only to feel bloated and sick later that night? The reason why is because you ate protein with a starch. This combination of food causes your stomach to produce conflicting enzymes, which puts a lot of stress on your digestive system and leaves you with gas, cramps and feeling miserable.
When you know how to eat healthy, nutritious food with the food combining system, these problems will be alleviated. Your stomach will produce only one type of enzyme and one type of acid. This means digesting food will be smoother and easier than ever, without the added stress of excessive acid. Food combining will give you the tools you need to help banish bloating, gas and heartburn that comes from poor digestion. Best of all, it works in as little as 24 hours. If you are ready to make a huge step towards better health, start food combining today.
